The latest tinkering trades reverse lot frontages with parallel streets or cul-de-sacs looping next to arterials, intercepting cross streets. Particularly evident in newer areas (suburbs) the web of freeways & arterials create a ring of barriers that lock (zoned) residential areas into pods. It’s just about impossible to construct a ‘main street’ in a new area because both major & minor arterials minimize connecting and particularly crossing streets and anything that interferes with speedy traffic. America, new roads are to conform to the roads hierarchy which categorizes roads based on vehicle speed and access needs. It is a bit of a misnomer to think of suburban streets as bottom up from large scale developers. But I also wonder if the economic efficiency of grids, if demonstrated, might encourage developers to explore using them even in suburbs. Given the problems caused by their layouts, it’s troubling that streets are so difficult to change. They continue the pattern of creating streets bottom-up - largely laid out by developers - within an overall grid. The discussion also makes me wonder how it would apply to suburbs. (Lower Manhattan, before the grid plan, was also a series of micro-grids that didn’t connect well). That would explain why so many local streets don’t match up on the other side when they cross main streets. It looks to me like Toronto’s was implemented as a top-down grid on the large scale (main streets), but as bottom-up micro-grids, created by the owners or developers, within that large scale. The discussion of street layouts naturally made me wonder about how Toronto’s old street grid developed. Alleys, on the other hand, come and go fairly easily.Īn interesting tidbit he shared was that New York’s grid plan specifically rejected ovals and circles in its street plan (which planners often like because they create vistas – think Queen’s Park) because they tend to become exclusive and elite. He found that streets are remarkably persistent - once laid down, it is hard to get rid of them, although grid streets are a little more persistent than non-grid streets. He also looked at changes to street plans - specifically, how often streets disappear. Too small, and streets start to take up too much of a city’s surface area. Too large, and the land inside the block starts to lose value because it is too far from the street. He argues that there is a sweet spot for block size. The discussion of street grids also inspired discussion of block sizes, on which there has apparently been some work (there is in fact a Journal of Urban Morphology). (He says his theory does not address suburbs because they have different incentives and are more purely residential, but that might also be an interesting area of investigation). It sounds plausible, but it would certainly need more thought and investigation before it can be said to be proven.

Maybe it continues to function fine maybe it doesn't. It just means you have reached the rated life of the drive in some way. It has been used very lightly (indicated by low power-on count and hours) but the Host Writes is somehow over 44Tb already. That's not capacity, it's total bytes written. Hydrants, lampposts, mailboxes, bicycles, cars - even objects as big as buses and bridges - have all been bombed in recent years, ever so softly and usually at night. “We look forward to bringing it all back in a new display for future event,” said Goins.Yarn bombing takes that most matronly craft (knitting) and that most maternal of gestures (wrapping something cold in a warm blanket) and transfers it to the concrete and steel wilds of the urban streetscape. Items included several pairs of kids gloves, hats and scarves available for anyone who needed them. Thanks to several donors, the installation included a “Need me, take me!” collection of handmade items on the fence at Friendship Park on 13th Street, right before the last snowy cold snap. “We are thankful for all those who donated yarn, projects, and time, and for the donation from Kreinik Manufacturing of special reflective thread used in several of our displays, which glows when using your camera flash.” The organizers also thank the Parkersburg Art Center for hosting preparation work parties, classes, and yarn art. Goins said they were amazed at the support and response they received. “It was always intended that this project be an event and to become part of our local community celebrations throughout the year, much like the Multi-cultural Festival or Parkersburg Homecoming.” We expect more participation and even more of our diversity to be expressed through yarn art,” she said. “It was our plan to create something that will grow and change over time with our community. Goins says they do plan to do this again. Passerbys even honked their cars in support as the yarn art was being installed. The response from the community was tremendously positive, with many expressing the desire to participate in a future event. We expect more participation and even more of our diversity to be expressed through yarn art. “Obermeyers Florist created their own yarn art display, as did many property owners.” “We had nearly a dozen businesses participate, and we were able to do yarn bombings in all corners of town.” Yarn installations could be found in North End on Emerson, on 42nd St., South Side on Pick St., on Garfield Ave., 13th St., Dudley Avenue, Oak St., 22nd St., and of course throughout Downtown. “Because we wanted the entire community involved, we asked for citizens and businesses to host yarn art as well, or to create their own displays and several did!” said Goins. “We had volunteers of all ages, from age seven and up,” Goins said. Some of the students donated their projects to the yarn bombing project, while others volunteered to help with preparation and installation. The installations in Parkersburg were more than a month in the making leading up to the installation on March 20th. Knitters and crocheters began creating pieces earlier this year, thanks in part to free classes at the Parkersburg Art Center led by Goins and van Rijn. We had nearly a dozen businesses participate, and we were able to do yarn bombings in all corners of town. “We knew that we wanted to create something that would include everyone and express unity in our community and allow for anyone who wanted to the opportunity to participate in something fun. Yarn is just warm and inviting and we knew everyone could connect with yarn in some way.” “Kim and I wanted to create a community art project that would not only represent our diverse community but to celebrate it,” said Goins. Yarn bombing has taken place all across the world, with stitchers covering everything from street signs and fences to entire city buses and buildings with yarn. Unlike graffiti, the result of which can be inspiring but also destructive – yarn installations are harmless and non-permanent. Yarn bombing is a growing movement of artistic-expression through public installations of knitted or crocheted street art. Organized by Rina Goins and Kim van Rijn, the Parkersburg Community Yarn Bombing event was the work of more than twenty savy stitchers who personalized public spaces in Parkersburg with light-hearted, brightly-colored crocheted cozies and cool, decorative knits. Last week, you may have noticed that Downtown Parkersburg was a bit more colorful than usual, with vibrant yarn adorning trees, columns, railings, even counter tops. Cross Contour Challengeįor your challenge today, draw something round and something flat (an apple on a table, for example) with cross contours. Let’s go back to that apple at the beginning. So a cross contour can have a lot of different styles, but here’s why they’re fantastic in a drawing: they make a flat object look dimensional, and it doesn’t take a lot. Henry Moore, Elephant Scull Henry Moore, The Artist’s Hand IV Henry Moore Below are some cross contour drawings by Henry Moore, an artist known primarily for his sculptures. Sculptors have an inherent focus on space, mass, volume, and dimension. There are some fascinating cross contour drawings made by sculptors. So cross contours help a two dimensional rendering be more three dimensional, and sculptural. It still has light and shadow to describe the form, but without the descriptive information from the cross contour brush strokes, can you see how the portrait got more flat? painting altered in photoshop I took out the color (sorry) but I also took out the curves. Ray TurnerĬompare the painting above with the same painting I manipulated in photoshop. Painting this way adds a feeling of volume and mass to the form. When artists paint, they sometimes follow cross contours with their brush stroke, so each stroke adds information about value, color, and surface topography, all at the same time. See how the collection of lines make the face look 3D?Ĭross contours can be careful as in the Albrecht Durer, or mechanical, as in the Benjamin above, but cross contours are also present in dynamic loose gestures like this self portrait by Kathe Kollwitz. Here, they add shadow and tone for the face on our money to look less flat. Though they have nothing to do with shadow, making lines across a surface does make that surface look darker, so they most often appear as marks in shading, like in these pillows by Albrecht Durer. They do a lot for a drawing, and they’re interesting. It took me years to realize that I actually like cross contours. When I learned cross contour in school, we did projects like this apple below, and I wondered what the heck this had to do with anything, because I didn’t see any good drawings that were like this, and although it had that nifty 3D effect, I never wanted to draw like this again. Cross contours describe the form like outlines do, but they do it in the middle instead of at the edge. This is where cross contours become useful. Without a mark here and there to cue us in to what’s happening in the expanse of whiteness, the drawing remains flat. These outlines describe what the shapes do around the edges, but inside those edges, with the exception of those tiny hatches at the knuckles, there is only blank white, just as outside the boundaries, there is also only blank white, so we don’t really know what happens there. You can see how the lines describe the contours around the edges of the form, the defining edges of the facial features, and the outlines around the fingers. Below is an Egon Schiele drawing using contour lines. Contours describe the shape along the edges of a thing. “Contour” is the French word for outline, so contour lines are, quite simply, outlines. We are 1/3 done! Sunday is observational drawing day, so I’m sharing an exercise from school, with a twist. Today is the 10th day of our 30 Day Challenge. They train up at home station and deploy to do their mission.Įven as Airborne? I always thought Airborne moved around alot due to TDYs and what not? That's one of the reasons I was looking into Airborne Linguist since they travel alot. There are also some slots in Arizona, New Mexico, and Florida for anyone, and also in Japan and England each for specific languages. Many 1A8X1s go to Nebraska and just stay there for many years. Overall linguists don't tend to move much. What is CLEP? What are the upper and lower divisions? What are the AU-ABC program? Sorry, I know NOTHING about how college works and I'm slowly understanding what each abbreviation in the Air Force is. Via the AU-ABC program you can find a school which will accept your CCAF as the full first two years. The upper division through an online school taking one or two classes at a time is doable. There are a few different ways to do it, but you can knock out most or all of the 'lower division' stuff via CLEP, language credits, and CCAF depending on how upgrade training. Would it be better to do a 6 year contract or do two 4 year contracts where the first 4 years is training and the second 4 years is actual job stuff? So if there is a shortage of open slots for a flight, the priority may not be the person getting out in a year. The tech school is often 2 years long, with a long training regimen at your first base before you even get certified to do your job (this is not part of tech school). The only things I can find state that the minimum qualifying score is like 95 and 110 can qualify you for everything but I thought for Air Force it was 110 for minimum?Ĩ) What languages are in demand right now? I would prefer either Japanese or Spanish or even German but I've heard Russian and Korean super in demand so idk.įor 1A8s the biggest thing is that you might not be able to actually do your job in 4 years. I'm afraid that if I list Linguist but also Security Forces, my recruiter would just ignore the Linguist and just give me Security Forces.ħ) Speaking of the DLAB, I've been trying to do some research to figure out what scores will qualify me for what and I can't find anything. 1) Is it better to sign a 6 year contract so it looks better for getting possibly commissioned for Officer or should I just stick to 4 years?Ģ) I know tech school is pretty long but once that's over and you can start doing your actual job, how easy is it to work on school work toward your undergrad?ģ) From what I can tell, by completing this tech school, I can get either credit or a full on AA in Intelligence Studies and Technology, right? How easy would that be to transition that to a BS in Criminal Justice?Ĥ) I'm assuming Airborne is going to travel alot more than Ground, however is there alot of permanent base changes in this job? I know there's alot of Temporary Deployments.ĥ) Is there anything I can do to prepare for the DLAB? I don't think I would do that bad on it however with the base requirements being 110, it kinda scares me.Ħ) Also, when do you take it? Can you request to take it? I would assume that if you express interest in a linguist job, the recruiter would set you up to take it.
While not as common as the other types of lightning injuries, people caught in “streamers” are at risk of being killed or injured by lightning. This includes anything that plugs into an electrical outlet, water faucets and showers, corded phones, and windows and doors. Whether inside or outside, anyone in contact with anything connected to metal wires, plumbing, or metal surfaces that extend outside is at risk. Most indoor lightning casualties and some outdoor casualties are due to conduction. Metal does not attract lightning, but it provides a path for the lightning to follow. Lightning can travel long distances in wires or other metal surfaces. Because large farm animals have a relatively large body-span, ground current from a nearby lightning strike is often fatal to livestock. The greater the distance between contact points, the greater the potential for death or serious injury. Typically, the lightning enters the body at the contact point closest to the lightning strike, travels through the cardiovascular and/or nervous systems, and exits the body at the contact point farthest from the lightning. Because the ground current affects a much larger area than the other causes of lightning casualties, the ground current causes the most lightning deaths and injuries.Ground current also kills many farm animals. In addition, ground current can travel in garage floors with conductive materials. Anyone outside near a lightning strike is potentially a victim of ground current. When lightning strikes a tree or other object, much of the energy travels outward from the strike in and along the ground surface. Most often, side flash victims have taken shelter under a tree to avoid rain or hail. Side flashes generally occur when the victim is within a foot or two of the object that is struck. In essence, the person acts as a “short circuit” for some of energy in the lightning discharge. While the ability to survive any lightning strike is related to immediate medical attention, the amount of current moving through the body is also a factor.Ī side flash (also called a side splash) occurs when lightning strikes a taller object near the victim and a portion of the current jumps from taller object to the victim. The heat produced when lightning moves over the skin can produce burns, but the current moving through the body is of greatest concern. In most direct strikes, a portion of the current moves along and just over the skin surface (called flashover) and a portion of the current moves through the body-usually through the cardiovascular and/or nervous systems. Direct strikes are not as common as the other ways people are struck by lightning, but they are potentially the most deadly. Most often, direct strikes occur to victims who are in open areas. Immediate medical attention, including calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED, may be critically important to keep the person alive until more advanced medical care arrives.Ī person struck directly by lightning becomes a part of the main lightning discharge channel. Any of these types of strikes can be deadly. It is not always possible to know exactly how a victim has been struck, but here is a list of ways that lightning strikes its victims. |
